What is punctuation? Read on and I’ll let you in on the secret which makes reading and understanding a hell of a lot easier.

Punctuation refers to the specific signs, symbols, and markings used in writing to separate sentences and clauses. The purpose of punctuation is to clarify the meaning and make it easier to understand. There are a few different punctuation marks which all have a different function (we’ll get on to them shortly). It’s very important to use correct punctuation as it can change the meaning of a sentence. This can lead to confusion and could even lead to disastrous consequences.

So, I’ll teach you the basics. Before we start, it’s worth noting that over time the rules have changed. British English and American English often differ too.
