the uses of ‘have’

Have is also a very common verb, it can be used as a main verb in all tenses and an auxiliary.

Have can mean many different things including:

  • To possess/own e.g. I have a red car.
  • To describe appearance e.g. He has a big nose.
  • To describe ability e.g. He has an eye for fashion.
  • To experience e.g. We had a great time.
  • Obligation e.g. You have to go now.
  • To replace the verbs ‘eat’ and ‘drink’ e.g. Let’s have dinner at 8.
